Still, this new planet, called 51 Pegasi b, was a surprise.A big one!

The planet, discovered by Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, is thought to be like Jupiter - except orbiting so close to the parent star that it's year … It was also the first known ‘hot Jupiter,’ a gas giant planet …

But new ground was broken when the planetary detection claimed around the normal Sun-like star 51 Peg was confirmed. Claims of planets orbiting other stars are rare, with perhaps the most credible pertaining to a neutron star - a star much different than the Sun. We enter this realm of discovery by working with actual data from observations of the star 51 Pegasi (51 Peg) made at the Lick Observatory in California. The planet makes the star "wobble."

It was the first planet found through the wobble it induced in its parent star, and its discovery led to that of thousands more extrasolar planets.

These data are the measurements of the Doppler shift of the wavelengths of the absorption lines seen in the spectra of 51 … 51 Pegasi b, the first extrasolar planet confirmed to orbit a sunlike star.
