Planck was selected in 1995 as the third Medium-Sized Mission (M3) of ESA's Horizon 2000 Scientific Programme, and later became part of its Cosmic Vision Programme. Planck produced its first all-sky image in 2010, and scientists are currently working to analyze and parse the various and complex elements. The oldest light in the universe, called the cosmic microwave background, as observed by the Planck space telescope is shown in the oval sky map.
